3035 Donahue, JJ (Jerry)> Upon graduation in 1954, Jerry married the former Claudette Pigeau from Callander, Ontario and proceeded to Korea to join the 3rd Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. On return to Canada, he served with the Regiment in Debert, NS and Gagetown, NB with a year at Queens University squeezed in to attain his BA(Hon.). Numerous moves ensued with tours in Shilo, Man.; Fort Bliss, TX; Picton, ON; Germany; Kingston, ON; Leavenworth, KS; Washington, DC; two tours in Vietnam, and several tours in Ottawa. During his first tour in Vietnam (one year) with the International Commission for Supervision and Control (ICSC), Jerry spent four months in Hanoi as the Permanent Representative for Canada where he had the opportunity to meet President Ho Chi Minh and the Defence Minister, General Giap, the hero of Dien Bien Phu. The U.S. bombings of Hanoi began during his tour and averaged five or six per day. Jerry attended the Canadian Army Staff College in Kingston and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Leavenworth, KS. The latter groomed him for his three year tour in the Pentagon as the Canadian Forces Liaison Officer to the Department of the Army. From 1974-1976, Jerry was the Canadian Forces Liaison Officer to the RCMP with the Secretariat planning security for the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. After thirty-seven years of service, Jerry retired in Ottawa in 1986. As a Consultant, he taught management for the Public Service Commission and was the Course Director for the DND Middle Management Course for Civilians. In 1995 Jerry retired completely to golfing in the summer and curling in the winter with an annual trip to Florida in March. He has been the President of the Ottawa Gunners, an Artillery Officers Association, since 1992.
Jerry and Claudette, who will celebrate their 45th Anniversary in 1999, are the proud parents of four children; Brian, Patrick, Catherine and Margaret.
He received his BASC in Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto in 1954 and followed this with two years as a staff member of the Civil Engineering Department at RMC. During this period he coached the Junior Hockey Team to the District Championship and earned an MSc in Structural Engineering from Queen's University. His entire career was devoted to consulting engineering in the Civil, Transportation and Water Resources fields in Toronto, Winnipeg and Ottawa, where he retired as a Principal of Dillon Consulting in 1990. He and Jeannette were married in 1954 and are the proud parents of three sons and two daughters. They are currently working on grandchildren and, although they number only three, the quality is high and rising. Retirement has been taken up by a little travelling, skating, biking and, of course, cottaging at Charleston Lake. This last bit does not sound as exciting as it is, so perhaps he should now get busy on that novel. Mordecai seems to have done well. (Ed note: We look forward to reading it).
3039 Engman, TE (Ted)
From Germany I returned to attend U of T to get my BSc. (mechanical). It was quite a breeze after RMC. Bill Hunter and I were sharing the same classes. As many of these were a repeat of material covered at RMC we were able to skip a lot of classes. Sadly Bill lost his brother in a single vehicle accident at the end of the school year and I lost contact with him after leaving Toronto. I rejoined the regiment at Wolsely Barracks in London and took my discharge after completing my three year term. My intent was to make a career of the army and had planned to return after getting a year of engineering experience on civvy street. That never happened as I found myself kept busier and with more responsibility than in the army.
I accepted a job as project engineer with Canada packers in Montreal. Transferred to head office engineering in Toronto. Then back to Montreal as mechanical superintendent. Then again back to Toronto as superintendent of the feed and fertilizer division.
During this time I also conducted research under Defence Research Board and other grants; published numerous scientific papers and several book contributions; was elected a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada; was a consulting engineer to various corporations in the US and Canada; served on the board of directors of the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering; attended National Defence College; was dean of RMC's continuing education division 1980-84 and Dean of Graduate Studies and Research 1984-95.
I had the privilege of serving the Ex-Cadet Club on the Executive Committee, as a director of the Foundation, and as president of the Kingston Branch. Post-retirement activities have included consulting, part-time teaching, volunteer work with Kingston General Hospital, travel (Pam and I have 'discovered' cruising) and banjo player in a Dixieland jazz band. (Sweet sounds Bill. Ed)
